NHL Alumni

The National Hockey League Alumni Association as been a strong supporter of Hockey for the Homeless since 1998 and the NHLPA has been a proud sponsor of the Toronto event since 2000. We at Hockey for the Homeless are truly grateful for their commitment to our worthy cause and the excitement and visibility they bring to our events.

A Letter from NHL Hall-of-Famer Mike Gartner:

Thank you for your interest in Hockey for the Homeless.

I have been involved with Hockey for the Homeless in Toronto since 1998 and have acted as Honorary Chairman since 2002. As a former player, the organization and their tournaments provide an enjoyable yet tangible way for me and my NHL Alumni associates to give back to our communities.

In my experience, the event itself (a single-day hockey tournament, reception dinner and silent auction) presents a unique way to raise the necessary funds to support solutions-based homeless organizations located in the host city. As recognized members of our communities, we (NHL Alumni) are often asked to play in charity golf tournaments and other events, but to be able to contribute by participating in an actual hockey tournament is a refreshing approach.

To date, the volunteer-driven organization has raised over $2 million in support for long term solutions with homeless agencies, shelters and transition programs across Canada. And, unlike many other fundraising initiatives and because the organization is volunteer-driven, the vast majority of the funds raised actually reach the people who need it most.

The people I have been involved with over the years have been very dedicated and passionate about finding solutions to the Homeless crisis in Canada and are committed to doing so through their association with our national pastime. I fully support their efforts and would encourage you to do the same. Who knows, maybe we'll be teammates at an upcoming Hockey for the Homeless event!
